Fear of the Unknown
Author: Marisa Byrnes.
Fear of failure prevents so many people from achieving their potential. So many good ideas have never taken flight because people don’t have the confidence or belief to make them happen.
The sporting arena is a prime example of fear of failure. Team managers across multiple different sports are so afraid of losing that they completely forget about their prime responsibility, how they can actually win.
That may seem like a contradiction but in the majority of cases these teams never achieve their ultimate goal, the ultimate prize. Instead they achieve some sort of moral victory such as avoiding relegation or a great losing performance in a semi-final etc.
The obsession is with control. These managers need to be able to have complete control on systems, tactics and ultimately players. This level of control reduces the fear of failure factor. However it also shackles discourages and inhibits the players from achieving their potential both as individuals and as teams.
Society is moving in this direction also. Fear is such a big factor in everyday life nowadays. More often than not it is a fear driven by financial concerns. Once people get into a way of life that gets them by then that is ok.
People who are out of work have a fear of what would happen financially if they were to go and set up a business, or get a new qualification and take up a job in a new industry. It is the same for people who are “burnt out” working in the same job for so long. Of course they think about moving to a new job or industry but fear of the unknown and ultimately failure more often than not prevents them from doing so.
Sometimes the first step is the hardest. Getting the new qualification, transitioning to the new industry, setting up the new business is more than achievable with all of the help and supports out there. However a lot of people never get to this point because they think about what they want to do, what they want to achieve but then say to themselves “I better not, what if it didn’t work, what if I lost my benefits, my wage etc. Then they drift back into the security and control of the system. Fear of what may happen prevents them achieving their potential.
Self-belief and confidence can overcome that fear and help people to take than the initial vital first step. We, through working with over 1000 people who have come to us over the last 6 years looking to take that step and get on a new path, have the experience, empathy and skills to help people to gain that confidence and belief.
